What In The Hell Is Citizen Arcane?

Citizen Arcane is an award-winning radio program which is aired Fridays from 4-6PM on 88.1 FM, WBGU, from the campus of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio (20 miles south of Toledo, OH). Citizen Arcane is hosted by Iggy (The Atomic Playboy), Rudy (The Swankmeister General), and Pablo (who is apparently too cool to add a permanent moniker to his name).

The boys at Citizen Arcane are devoted to putting on a highly humorous show sprinkled with generous amounts of peppy and innovative music. Citizen Arcane has been named best radio program on WBGU and has also won the Platinum Platypus Award for college radio excellence.

Hey! The Internet is on computers now, and so are we! Listen to Citizen Arcane every Friday from 4pm-6pm (Eastern Daylight Time). No plug-ins necessary!

What's New?

Apparently, Citizen Arcane Online HQ has become a bi-weekly venture. I didn't mean for this to happen, but get used to it. After our finals week show, things are really gonna slow down around here. Citizen Arcane 2: The Electric Boogaloo will not exist this summer (in fact, it will never exist again), so there won't be much to update. Check back periodically, though, because we will be massively updating links, rants and other ancillary stuff. (4/27)

Don't forget: Dr. Edward Whipple, BGSU Vice-President for Student Affairs is slated for a live interview on Citizen Arcane this Friday, April 30th. Tune in to 88.1fm, or catch the show live on the web. "Whipps" will also be spinning some of his favorite records, or so we are told. (4/27)

Speaking of interviews, we held a special episode of Citizen Arcane on Monday, April 19th from 8-9pm. What good reason did we have to pre-empt the lovely and talented DJ Piaget? Quite simply, we were hand-chosen by WBGU's braintrust to conduct a live interview with the one and only Insane Clown Posse. It was really a blast. We even got them to record a liner for our show. Take a listen! (4/27)

More recently, we conducted Episode 312 of Citizen Arcane. This was our bi-annual "mail it in" show, and I think we pulled it off relatively well. Of course, I would think that though, wouldn't I? (4/27)

Episode 311 of Citizen Arcane was a little different. We've never really tried to do an installment of Citizen Arcane without Rudy (The Swankmeister General), but for some reason, we just decided that "the show must go on." So, Pablo moved into the co-pilot's chair and we filled his vacant seat with Bubba (The Escaped Convict), an old-school Citizen Arcane fan. Unfortunately, we didn't catch this one on tape, but we did have a little fun with the whole BGSU/They Might Be Giants fiasco, and we got a caller from The Shed who just happens to be in a BG band called Stylex, who rock and are playing at Howard's Club H on Wednesday, April 28th. Go! (4/27)

On Thursday, April 8th, WBGU General Manager Brian Julius Kwolek and Program Director Anthony Cavallario presented Citizen Arcane with the award for Best WBGU Radio Program at the annual BGSU Telecommunications department awards banquet. I wanted to refuse it, but Rudy would have killed me. Personally, the show that deserved to win, if you ask me, is The AJ/DJ Dub Hour, a three-hour tour of "old-school, new-school, and underground true-school hip-hop." Every time I listen to that show, it blows my friggin' mind. Wednesday nights, 11pm-2am on 88.1fm, WBGU. (4/13)

Of course, after having our egos stroked, we had to make a big deal about the award on Episode 310 of the award-winning Citizen Arcane program. The way we figure it, with the awards comes recognition from the public, and the more public recognition we can get, the more companies will want to give us money to mention their products. I try not to think of it as selling-out, but rather as simple product placement to finance the future goals of the show. We could really use a cell phone to do remotes with, AllTel, ahem. Did I say that? (4/13)

In a strange twist of fate, our formerly regular newscaster, Marcy Wadlinger, was named by the "Bowling Green Radio News Organization" (which shall forever be mentioned in scare quotes) as Newscaster Of The Year. Qualities such as broadcasting skill, commitment, and reliability were mentioned before her award was presented. What caught my discerning ear, however, was when they announced that she rarely, if ever, misses a shift. Allow me to be frank, but this is all fucking bullshit. Marcy has not reported for her Friday 5pm newscast (during our show) for nearly 4 months. And as far as her "broadcasting skill" is concerned, I simply refer you to Episode 207 of our show. Sound clips are available for you to hear Marcy's professional demeanor. It is because of all of this, that we are about to demand "BGRNO" force Marcy's "award-winning newscasts" to be aired during our award-winning show once again. (4/13)

In honor of Easter and Good Friday (how "good" can it be when your savior gets nailed to a cross? I would rename the day, if it were up to me...), we played "trinities" of music throughout Episode 309. Similar to triple-shots, but not quite. Two trinities stand out in our mind: 1) the request trinity of Low, Danielson Family, and Fugazi, and 2) the A.C. trinity, which we must stress was a request, and we would not have played it had it not been requested. Huh huh, speed metal, uh huh huh huh. (4/13)

Episode 308. We said "bitch." A lot. Ira Lee was there. Oh no... (4/13)

You'll be happy to know that our 2nd Annual Citizen Arcane Oscar Pre-Show (Episode 307) was nowhere near as raunchy, randy or ribald as the actual show. However, we did come up with several inventive ways of killing children. Our Oscar picks were way off, further proving that we are not experts. Speaking of the Oscars... (3/22)

What is up with Shakespeare In Love? When I evaluated the field for Best Picture, I figured it was a solid fourth behind Saving Private Ryan, Life Is Beautiful and The Thin Red Line, but firmly entrenched above Elizabeth. Miramax must've done one hell of a lobbying job because Shakespeare escaped with 7 Oscars all together, including Best Picture. In my humble opinion, Shakespeare In Love was nothing more than an extraordinary "chick-flick". I'm not saying that I didn't like it, because I did. However, it was NOT a Best Picture caliber film. It does not leave an indelible mark on your mind, heart and soul like Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, or even films that were not nominated like American History X, Affliction or The Truman Show. I think the Academy was trying to shake things up this year (it seems like a really long time since an epic film didn't win Best Picture), but it shouldn't have. Private Ryan should have won the award, and upon a second viewing of both films, I'll think you'll see what I mean. Complaints? (3/22)

I was pretty bored tonight, so I re-organized my music collection. Here's the breakdown:

I counted them by slab, not by album (double or triple CD sets, LPs or 7"s count as 2 or 3 discs), so the total number of albums is slightly lower. But I've reached the magic number 200. Well, to be honest, I've still got a laundry basket full of old CDs that I don't listen to anymore back at my mom's house, so the count is probably closer to 300. Stay tuned. (3/22)

Rudy, Roosevelt, Pam and I all went to see American History X last night. It is easily the most disturbing film I've seen since Saving Private Ryan and probably more so than that. Edward Norton was incredible and should win the Oscar for Best Actor, though he won't because of the content of the film and his character in particular. If you get a chance to see it on the big screen, do it, but if you miss it American History X will be on video in a matter of weeks. (3/18)

Along with the tributes to Kubrick and DiMaggio, I have written a new rant. I'll call it "El Ranto," but you can figure that one out for yourself. (3/17)

We took the time to break in some new material on Episode 306. No, we didn't. It's the same old crap. It was a mediocre show, but worth listening to in order to hear Rudy blame Jesus for BGSU's e-mail system conversion. Speaking of which... (3/17)

The new University e-mail system really sucks. We used to have a PINE-based e-mail system that allowed any BGNet user to use telnet to check their mail from virtually any computer in the world. Well, that system is scrapped now and all users are required to use some sort of POP3 system or a specially configured version of Lotus Notes. Lotus Notes, however, is the least user-friendly program I have ever had the misfortune of running and the only other option for on-campus students (such as Rudy, Pablo and I) is to carry around a disk with Eudora Light preferences stored on it. This is a royal pain in the ass. I'm thinking about taking up smoking so I can start wearing those t-shirts with the front pockets. I'll keep a pack of cigarettes and my Eudora disk in there all the time. You can't have one without the other... (3/17)

Highlanders Unite! Our new hero Joe Spencer joined us for Episode 305 of Citizen Arcane. Joe is a bagpiper, and we, being ever in touch with our heritage, about wet ourselves when Joe played "Scotland the Brave" for us live in the studio. Nothing much else happened. Of course, after having heard Scottish nationalism trumpeted (or rather bagpiped) over our airwaves, what else are we supposed to remember? (2/22)

If you Brittany Speers missed Episode Brittany Speers 304 of Citizen Brittany Speers Arcane, you Brittany Speers missed out big Brittany Speers time. We Brittany Speers couldn't stop talking Brittany Speers about Brittany Speers Brittany Speers. It's not that we're Brittany Speers obsessed Brittany Speers, but Brittany Speers we'd all Brittany Speers go to jail Brittany Speers if we could Brittany Speers have her Brittany Speers. (2/17)

When I was listing off my new favorite bands last week, I egregiously overlooked Scott4, a band reminiscent of old-school Beck in that messed up experimental folk kind of way. I'm also really getting into the laid back sounds of Dieselhed (who ironically enough are on Beck's Bong Load Custom Records label) and the beautiful indie-rock tones of Citizens' Utilities, who only Rudy (or another really big fan) could adequately describe. Please buy these records! Your coolness quotient will rise exponentially... (2/17)

Our third episode of the new season (Episode 303) was possibly the most raunchy two hours of radio that we have ever done. We're still not sure if we're proud of that or not. We started the whole thing off by "kidnapping" two young ladies to prove to Henry Rollins (who is coming to speak on campus on Tuesday, February 9th at the Lenhart Grand Ballroom) how cool it would be to be kidnapped by us. Then, somewhere along the line, we got on the subject of sex, and it just went downhill from there. It really was a lot of fun, though, and we played 15 currents, including bands like The Dusters, Thrush Hermit, and The Bonaduces, who are all well on their way to becoming three of my new favorite bands. (2/8)

Speaking of favorites, I've come to the conclusion that Shellac's 1993 7" release Uranus is possibly the greatest slab of vinyl in existence. The pulsating rythym of "Doris" on the A-side, coupled with the primal scream-laden "Wingwalker" on the B-side produce a more intense emotional effect in two songs than most bands can drum up on an entire LP. If you see this slab at your local record store, I implore you to snatch it up. You cannot possibly regret it. (2/8)

The first of our new, cool projects is finished. The Vegetarian Neophyte Diaries have alighted here. Follow the continuing saga of Iggy (The Atomic Playboy) on a quest to strip himself of the habit of eating meat. Please check it out. (2/3)

I spent a good chunk of the Saturday afternoons of my young life watching college football games as called by the inimitable Keith Jackson. For 32 years, Keith Jackson was THE voice of college football, parlaying all the action of the game to the viewer at home with his common sense insights and the occasional "Whoa, Nelly!" Tonight, at the Fiesta Bowl, Jackson will hang it up. You needn't be a huge football fan to appreciate all that Keith Jackson personifies: simplicity, humility, and a love of his craft. To me, and many others I am sure, college football will never be the same again. I'll miss you, Keith... (1/4)

In a vain attempt to find something interesting to put on this page while we're taking our winter vacation, we (mostly I) drafted the Top 25 New Songs We Played On Citizen Arcane This Past Semester List. Yeah, I know that's a stupid name for a list, but it's the best I could come up with after picking the top 25 new songs we played on Citizen Arcane this past semester. (1/1)

In the near future, Citizen Arcane Online HQ will be changing host services. We are doing this for higher reliabilty on our end and your end. The new server will not be as overloaded as this one, meaning this site and all of its contents will load faster. Also, we will be getting four times the storage space that we have now, meaning we can add a lot more content, pictures, sound files, and be able to archive four full years (or maybe five if we don't graduate on time) of shows. Give us a few weeks to get this set up. Of course, that's CitizenArcaneSpeak for, "I'll do it during the commercials..." (7/24)

A Quick Note About Viewing This Page

After doing some experimenting, I've decided that this site would be best viewed with Netscape Navigator (4.0 or better to accomodate the frames and the Java). You can use Microsoft Internet Explorer (4.0 or better), but why would you want to? Bill Gates is rich enough... Oh yeah, it'll do you good to switch to an 800x600 resolution if you can. This is not necessary, but it does make the site look nicer. Thank you for your patronage.
